The Origin of the Name "Canary Islands"

There are several versions:

1. "Isles of Dogs":

  • A scientist from Ancient Greece claimed that "Canariae Insulae," which means "Isles of Dogs" in Latin, was named due to the abundance of large dogs that inhabited the area.

  • Other versions suggest that the "dogs" are fur seals in these waters.

2. Berber Theory. According to some historians, the name comes from the Canarii Berber tribe, which lived in Morocco.

3. "Isles of the Blessed". Due to their favorable climate and fertile lands, the islands were sometimes referred to as the "Isles of the Blessed" during the Middle Ages.

4. Phoenician Theory. This version claims that the name "Canary" comes from the Phoenician word "kynaria," meaning "island of purple dogs.".
